Below are some examples of where the World Crokinole Championship utilizes volunteers.
Equipment Setup/Collection
During the day we need people ensuring our playing area is setup properly, as we transition from doubles to singles and to the playoff portions of the day.
Some people are responsible for ensuring each table has scorecards, pens, wax, 20 dishes, and the correct number of chairs and discs.
While others help move boards and tables out of the way when the preliminary round is complete.
Even as little as 5 minutes of time from one person can help ensure a playing area has been correctly setup.
Referees
While sometimes our referees are called upon for a rule clarification or to judge whether a disc is touching a line, our referees mostly help with ensuring the day runs smoothly.
From ensuring players move to the next board correctly, to providing additional wax for players when requested, to signing-off on scorecard corrections, our referees help to ensure the tournament runs on-time and that players are treated fairly.
The time commitment for referees is around a couple of hours in the morning and/or afternoon.
There is an optional "rules refresher" meeting for referees prior to the tournament.
Scorekeepers
Scorekeepers are responsible for validating the scorecards of each of the tournament's participants.
While being comfortable with numbers is a bonus, simply being capable with a calculator is all that is required.
The time commitment for scorekeepers is around 30-45 minutes in the morning and/or afternoon.
Friday Setup
Starting at 1:00pm on the day before the tournament, we begin transforming a hockey arena into the largest crokinole tournament in the world.
This requires setting up over 100 crokinole boards and tables, along with the necessary chairs, on to the arena floor, as well as supplying each board with discs, wax and 20 dishes.
The work takes a few hours but is always made easier with each additional hand, and it's a good opportunity as well to socialize with other crokinole players and volunteers.
